Overview
Cecelia Health is a startup providing medical coaching services to diabetes patients. Diabetes is chronic, and in recent years coaching programs have been an increasingly positive addition to patients’ journeys to optimum health. Cecelia Health asked us to dive deeper into patients’ pain points in managing diabetes and find a potential way to expand the coaching network’s reach and effectiveness.
Role
My role was to shape the research and ideation process, help the team find an effective improvement to the coaching network and design the hi fidelity UI.
Solution
No pressure task app that let’s expert health coaches load a small number of tailored tasks into the to-do list every week so patients can reduce cognitive load, track tasks honestly, and then share valuable insights back to coaches easily.

1o1 interviews
We conducted five 1o1 interviews over zoom for about 30 minutes each. We found there are a huge number of pain points and difficulties, and no one problem set stood out. However the affinity clusters cleanly split into two overarching categories. The team at Cecelia Health wanted to leverage their expertise in coaching and therefore we focused on the 2nd category. 1) Onboarding/learning about illness provides opportunities to improve trajectory but the process can be overwhelming. 2) Daily maintenance has many opportunities to improve patient outcomes but most important actions are easier said than done

Desk research + ecosystem survey
We reviewed medical journals and white papers to understand what was the prognosis and what were the most successful treatment options. We found: 1) Treatment requires building daily habits but varies widely from lifestyle improvement up to medication, hourly monitoring and adjustment of blood glucose and insulin. 2) Huge number of available software and hardware aids to for wide range of touchpoints 3) Upwards of 50% of patients not taking medications 4) Coaches are increasingly shown to be effective

Daily Regimen Adherence
My team first created a lifelong disease journey map to see the entire experience. However this did not provide a granular enough set of opportunities so we then built a one week journey map of a patient’s interactions with their coach to help synthesize our findings. What stood out to us was the large dip in the days between coaching sessions (implementation stage). Users were motivated after talking to their coach but could become frustrated when taking daily actions. Several opportunities emerged:

Picking a direction
Goal: Reach high fidelity MVP mockup (but not test due to HIPPA laws) HMW leverage coaching network to build daily habits with small actionable goals HMW simplify the software/hardware ecosystem by focusing on what works HMW give patients reminders that motivate but don't annoy HMW improve patient/coach feedback on why goals were difficult
Mapping ideas
1. Guided audio note tool (daily habit motivation from the patient themselves) 2. Food based tracking system (reduce need for hardware with controlled portions) 3. Bootcamp of sorts for diabetes education and management (building better habits) 4. Mindfulness/ meditation app tailored specifically for diabetics (daily habits, no reminders) 5. Universal bioinformation app (think Mint, consolidated feedback for patient and coach) 6. Gamified tracking and tasks (effective in every way but hard to implement) 7. Midweek motivational boost (fun reminders, message from coach) 8. Mindfulness/ meditation app tailored specifically for diabetics (daily habits, no reminders) Chosen 8. Guided goals and task tracking tool (coaches, simple steps, good feedback)
Direction
Our direction: Guided task tracking tool that allows patients to see simplified tasks, consistently track their completion or difficulties, and SHARE accurate data back to their coach. Based on our research this system would reduce cognitive load to improve adherence, improve data accuracy, and amplify the amount of data shared back to coaches.

Building an engaging comforting brand
For this project I reimagined what the app could be without the timeline constraints. What could the brand be. How could it convey encouragment without being too opinionated. The color palette is friendly and motivating. The logo is intended to evoke continuity

Building around a motto: One Day
Diabetes is a today problem that looks like a tomorrow problem. The tedious fixes required to improve outcomes dont appear to have an impact. Patients may think, one day this will be a problem but it doesnt feel like one today. The goal is to reframe and illuminate future outcomes as daily tangible actions

Reminders, your way
Diabetes is a grind day in and day out. Our research indicated some people might feel ovewhelm from daily tasks that never end. What if the logo could help remind in different ways to match the different moods a single user might feel throughout their journey

Results
This project provides a concept for a tool that is much much friendlier to patients than many other products in the market. Users need not think of what is next, tasks feel simplified, and fun, it is easy but not annoying to view the culmination of daily tasks in a months or years long physical representation of health.
